Q1:Why wont iMovie won't import my MP4 files?
"Every time I attempt to import an MP4 video/audio file from my Sony EX3, iMovie 11 (and all other Adobe products) tells me it's "unsupported or damaged". I know it's not damaged because it plays through VLC and BS player. Strangely enough it won't play through Quicktime though. why? "

iMovie prefer MPEG-4 and H.264 codecs instead of others while MP4 can contain various video codecs. So if your MP4 videos are not accepted by iMovie, it's probably because of the video codec incompatibility.

Q2:AVI File in iMovie 09 Only Plays Audio?
"I'm having this problem that every time I import an .avi file in to iMovie 09, there's no video just the audio. I deleted the preferences and the only way I was able to see the video was when I changed the file extension to .mov. Is there a way that I can see the .avi in iMovie without having to change the extension on the files?"

iMovie only reads AVI that both the audio and the video were compressed by using a codec that iMovie can recognize. If your AVI video files are not imported, it's because of the codec used to create the AVI file is not supported by iMovie, even if you have Perian installed, which only allows you to play AVI in QuickTime.

Q3:How to edit mkv files in iMovie ?
"I've some videos in mkv extension and I'd like to edit some scene in iMovie. Is it possible? How to?"

Well, MKV (Matroska Video), as an open and free container format is not so compatible with NLEs including iMovie, though it is able to keep diverse video, audio, and subtitle components in just one file and has ability to let users enjoy high definition videos at home easily.

Okay, since Apple InterMediate Codec(AIC) is the the most compatible codec introduced by Apple which ensures maximum editing quality and efficiency when working with iMovie, the easy option to edit AVI/MKV/MP4 in iMovie would be converting the AVI/MKV/MP4 files to AIC encoded MOV.
